Ephesus Ancient Site - Ephesus Tours

Ephesus which is one of the biggest open air museum in the world, is a very attractive place for the tourists and archeology lovers. There are many places to explore in Ephesus Ancient City and its surrounding. Ephesus was established in 6000BC and settled around Artemis Temple which is the biggest Temple. The name of Ephesus goes back to the Amazon Queen named Ephesia. (Amazons also established Symrna which is today's Izmir Izmir to Ephesus ) The Native Anatolian nations who are the Lelegians and the Carians where one of the first inhabitants in Ephesus. In the 11th Century BC the Ionians came to Ephesus under the leadership of King Androklos and established Ionian civilization. In the 7th century BC Ephesus was captured by the Lydian King Croesus. Soon after the Lydian Kingdom was defeted by the Persains who stayed in Ephesus until Alexander the Great entered Anatolia. In the third century the new Ephesus city was established by Lysimachos who was the General of Alexander the Great. Lysimachos renamed Ephesus after Arsinoe. In the 2nd Century, Ephesus was conquered by the Pergamum Kings. They ruled Ephesus until the Romans destroyed the Pergamum Kingdom in 133 BC. So the Roman Era started in Anatolia. Ephesus became the capital city of the Romans in Asia Minor. Most ruins of  the Roman period are visible at present. After the Romans converted to Christianity in the 4th Century AD,  the Roman Empire was devided into two; the West Roman Empire and the East Roman Empire. Short after the West Roman Empire was destroyed, the East Roman Empire was called the Byzantium Empire. So Ephesus became a Christian and Byzantium City. After the 10th Century AD Ephesus was not existing anymore because of the earthquakes, silted up harbour and the malaria. The last inhabitants abandoned Ephesus and moved arround  Selcuk Castle.
